My work crosses a number of levels of interest and debate, which is mostly centered around film. Whether its film as a medium or referencing film genres and television, what we chose to watch and the experiences we have towards the moving image fascinates me. From our desire to watch disaster films and the effects these movies have on real life disasters portrayed on the news, to why people cry when watching films and our desire to see new 'worlds' of fiction. Film has been a rich stimulus to my practice and my work plays both within and outside the medium, searching for new understandings of film. My work often incorporates radio-controlled vehicles attached with wireless cameras. These are maneuvered by the audience, through large installations. Here the audience sees the world through the eyes of the vehicle.
Recently I have been working with video headsets, looking at new strategies of audience participation. The viewer can crawl and feel their way through large film sets. Seeing the 'world' through the eyes of video. With the headsets the viewer would become the cameraman, creating their own 'filmic' journey. They would also become a character to be viewed, as they roam around the installation wearing 'machine mutant headsets'. The audience would be more actively aware of the presence that film has on the work, as they view both physical and virtual spaces. I am interested in how this would be achieved on a large scale, with multiple film-sets that distort the viewer's perception of the space. I am also look at new strategies for narrative to evolve within the work. Up until now my viewers have been physically distanced from the film sets, but I now want to see how, through the aid of props and the act of being filmed, the audience will react with the world and create their own narrative and characteristics within
